Dr. Grapow started his medical education in Bochum, Germany, spent his fourth year in Valencia, Spain (Erasmus Grant) and received his medical degree from the Friedrich-Wilhelms University Bonn, School of Medicine, Germany. After completing his internship in cardiovascular surgery at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, CA, U.S.A. he continued his surgical training at the Martin-Luther-University Hospital in Halle/Saale/Germany 1997. Interrupted by one year of basic research in cardiovascular pharmacology he completed his cardiovascular surgery residency in Basel, Switzerland and received his board certification of the German Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in 2004. After cardiovascular fellowships at the Inselspital Bern, Switzerland, the East Carolina Heart Institute in Greenville and the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona Dr. Grapow joined the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Basel in 2011 and became Professor in 2017. He has won a variety of scientific awards, amongst others the prestigious “Young Investigator Award” of the European Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Monaco 2002.
His special clinical interests are reconstructive valve surgery, minimally invasive mitral valve repair, mechanical circulatory support systems (ventricular assist devices), surgical solutions in the treatment of heart failure and aortic surgery. Dr Grapows basic research team focusses on physiology and pharmacology of bypass grafts, development of artificial cellulose-based vascular grafts and tissue engineering of cardiac muscle.
