
Yoshinosuke Fukuchi, MD, PhD

Prof Yoshinosuke Fukuchi graduated from Gunma University Medical School in 1964 with MD and was conferred PhD degree from Tokyo University in 1972. He assumed as a research fellow at the Meakins-Christie Laboratories of McGill University in Canada with Prof. P.T. Macklem (1974-1976). He served as a senior lecturer in 1979-1986 and was promoted to associate professor of Faculty of Medicine, University of Tokyo in 1986. He has assumed the chairman and professor of department of Respiratory Medicine of Juntendo University, Tokyo, from 1996 to 2005. He became a visiting professor after 2005. He was honored with the highest JRS (the Japanese Respiratory Society) award in 1985 and with the presidential commendation of ATS in 2003. He was awarded the APSR medal in 2009 for his outstanding contribution to the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR). His main research fields include respirology (mainly in COPD and aspiration pulmonary diseases) and geriatrics (aging science in particular).
The ERS awarded him with Award of Merit and honorary membership in 2012. He was nominated to the COPD Hall of Fame at COPD in June 2012. His publication includes more than 260 peer reviewed original papers (190 in English) and 260 review articles (mostly in Japanese). He is an author or co-author of 90 books and editor of 2 English books.
He assumed president of the APSR (2004-2006), Chairman of the Board of Directors of JRS (2000-2004), president of Japanese Respiratory Care Society (1998-1999), president of Japan Geriatrics Society (2003-2004), and president of the 11th APSR Congress in Kyoto 2006. He was appointed to ATS Board of Directors (2000-2002, 2004-2006). He was a GOLD executive committee member and science committee member (2000-2009), editorial board member of the ERJ (2004-2007) and international editorial board member of the THORAX (2006-2009).
