Francesco Nappi, MD

Centre Cardiologique du Nord de Saint-Denis, Paris, France

Dr Francesco Nappi is a cardiothoracic surgeon currently employed at Centre Cardiologique du Nord St Denis, Paris, France. He graduated as medical doctor at the University Federico II di Napoli in 1985. He was first board-certified in general surgery and then obtained the board in cardiothoracic surgery. He was subsequently appointed as staff surgeon at the Hopital La Pitie Salpetriere where obtained subspecializations in heart transplantation, pediatric and minimally invasive surgery. He has been working for several years in the field of cardiac surgery developing surgical expertise and research interests in both clinical and biological aspects of heart disease.

In particular, his clinical research activity is focused on several themes related to functional mitral regurgitation, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, use of homografts and allogeneic tissues in valvular disease and coronary artery disease. On the basic science front his research activity is centred on the elaboration of biomechanical models describing the behaviour of cardiovascular structures and on the consequent development of bioengineering solutions to improve the functionality and durability of the currently available biological substitutes. In this context, his experimental efforts, raised from several collaborative activities with other groups, led to the production of a bioresorbable scaffold to reinforce allogeneic tissues and vascular conduits for use in pediatric cardiac surgery. The results of his experimental activities also led to the filing of an international patent in this field.

His scientific activity is testified by several papers published on international peer-reviewed journal and he presented his results in a number of international meetings including the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Cardiology, the European Association of Cartdiothoracic Surgery etc. He has also been guest editor for a supplement of the Journal Drug Target Insights focused on drug delivery devices and serves as reviewer for both clinical and biomedical journals.

Research interest: Cardiovascular surgery, CABG, Endocarditis, Heart Valve Disease
