Thoracic Surgery Fellowship
The Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & China National Cancer Center is accepting applications for 6-month to 2-year training positions from young and middle-aged esophageal surgeons worldwide.
The Department of Thoracic Surgery in this center has ranked rst among all thoracic surgery departments in China for 8 consecutive years. In the Ward of Esophageal Cancer, minimally invasive and open surgeries are routinely performed for a variety of benign and malignant esophageal tumors. More than 1000 operations on cancer of the esophagus and esophagogastric junction are performed annually, of which over 80% are minimally invasive surgical procedures. “Early oral feeding following minimally invasive esophageal esophagectomy” and “Li’s anastomosis” are pioneer techniques of global scope. During the 3-hour surgical procedure, no chest tube, nasointestinal tube, nasogastric tube, or jejunostomy tube is required; the patient is able to eat food by mouth on the second post-operative day and can be discharged 5–7 days after surgery.
Each year, more than 100 surgeons from China and abroad attend training programs in the center. The trainees who attend will gain valuable experience in perioperative management of esophageal cancer and in various esophageal surgical procedures including routine minimally invasive surgeries such as McKeown esophagectomy, Ivor Lewis esophagectomy, and three-field lymph node dissection, along with more complex procedures such as total pharyngolaryngoesophagectomy, colonic replacement of the esophagus, salvage surgery after high-dose radiochemotherapy, and repair of tracheoesophageal fistula. By participating in multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions, trainees will have access to the latest concepts and techniques in the multidisciplinary treatment of esophageal cancer, including standardized neoadjuvant therapy and adjuvant therapy. Many multi-center clinical trials are routinely carried out in the center. By participating in these studies, the trainees will have the opportunity to publish academic articles, attend international academic conferences, and give academic lectures.
The Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & China National Cancer Center wish to provide equal opportunities for young physicians who are interested in esophageal surgery around the world. The center will offer free accommodation for trainees and provide scholarships for those who demonstrate exceptional ability.
